Bd Ft Calculator — Fast, Accurate Board Footage for Lumber Orders
I’m Brandon Keller, construction estimator and scheduler. This quick guide walks you through the board foot (bf) calculation used for lumber takeoffs and purchase orders. Keep scope tight, units consistent, and show your waste clearly so vendors can price apples-to-apples.
Scope & Units
- Purpose: Compute board feet per piece and total, with optional waste/overage.
- Units: Thickness (in), Width (in), Length (ft & in). Output: board feet (bf) and ft³.
- Definition: 1 bf = 144 in³ = 1/12 ft³.
Inputs
- Thickness T (in)
- Width W (in)
- Length L: feet + inches
- Pieces n (count)
- Waste/Overage (%) — optional, 0–15% typical depending on grading, trim-out, and cuts
Formulas
- lengthIn = length_ft × 12 + length_in
- bf_each = (T × W × lengthIn) / 12
- bf_total = bf_each × n
- bf_total_with_waste = bf_total × (1 + waste/100)
- cubic_feet = bf_total_with_waste / 12
Worked Example
2×6, 8'-0", 10 pieces, 10% waste
- T = 2 in, W = 6 in
- L = 8 ft → lengthIn = 8 × 12 = 96 in
- bf_each = (2 × 6 × 96)/12 = 8 bf
- bf_total = 8 × 10 = 80 bf
- bf_total_with_waste = 80 × 1.10 = 88 bf
- cubic_feet = 88 / 12 = 7.3333 ft³
Typical Ranges & Notes
- Waste: 5–10% for straight cuts; 10–15% for trims, defects, and field fit-up.
- Nominal vs actual: Calculator assumes entered dimensions are the sizes you intend to use. If you’re using nominal sizes (e.g., 2×4 = 1.5×3.5 in actual), enter actual.
- Length entry: Use feet plus leftover inches to avoid rounding errors.
Common Pitfalls
- Mixing nominal with actual thickness/width.
- Forgetting to apply waste for trims and on-site selection.
- Double-counting waste when both estimator and supplier add overage — state your waste clearly.
Sanity Check
- Rule of thumb: A 2×6×8' piece is about 8 bf. If your per-piece result is far off, recheck units.
Cost Planning (Optional)
- Direct material cost = bf_total_with_waste × unit price ($/bf).
- Keep markups separate: add sales tax, freight, OH&P after quantity is final.
Planning estimate only. Validate against drawings/specs and supplier quotes before buyout.
